A teachable moment

FADE IN.

GROCERY STORE – INT. – DAY
A man is standing at the sausage counter, trying to choose which one to have as a younger man appears behind him, with two children in tow.

This is the other guy.

RISTO
Excuse me.

MAN

RISTO
Excuse me, I’m sorry, could I just…

Risto takes a package of delicious Finnish Lauantaimakkara (Saturday sausage, the better kind), and casually throws it in his basket. The man turns around and accidentally hits Risto’s 4-year-old daughter in the head with his basket.

MAN
Uh. [Grunts). Mmmm.. wow, whoops, oy.

RISTO
Daughter, come on over here.

MAN
He he, I’m just running over people here.

RISTO
And what does one say then?

MAN (thinking Risto was talking to Daughter)
Oh, no, no, it’s not necessary.

RISTO
What about you?

MAN
What?

RISTO
I didn’t hear you say ‘sorry.’

MAN
Um… You can’t be serious?

RISTO
Well, if you bump into people, what do you say?

MAN
Uh…

Man looks at Risto in disbelief, waving his hands as the two stare each other.

RISTO
Why would you not say sorry to her?

Man turns around and walks away huffing.

RISTO (to kids)
I hope I didn’t embarrass you again.

FADE OUT.

  1. Good stuff! I had the same experience with my daughter. A man stepped on her foot and just mumbled when he turned around and saw that it was a kid. I didn’t find myself fast enough to ask him to say ‘sorry’. Instead I said, sarcasticly, "It’s ok. She has two feet." He snickered nervously and went away.

I mean – what’s up with that? Next time I’ll do a round kick around the genital area on the bastard.
