Cover me

Back to the topic of covers. Magazine covers.

ESPN The Magazine celebrates its 10 years in the business, and with good reason. The Mag is a success story in a field where we don’t hear them that often.

Almost paradoxically, it celebrates it by launching a new website. On the site, you can see all 272 covers of the magazine history. Of those, six have been dedicated to hockey, in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2006.

Ladies and gentlemen, here they are. The NHL cover boys of an ESPN decade: Wayne Gretzky, Eric Lindros, Mario Lemieux, the Detroit Red Wings, Peter Forsberg, and Sidney Crosby.

Three of them have retired, and one of them … well, that Forsberg cover is painfully current: “Is this the LAST SHOT for Peter Forsberg?”

And yes, Sidney Crosby is the face of the new NHL.

  1. Great magazine but very little hockey coverage Imagine my joy when I saw "Race for the Cup" on the front cover. Imagine my disappointment when I opened it up and saw it was about NASCAR and not Stanley!
