Jan 31, '07 : Stating the obvious

I am now a Mac person. I've been a Mac person for about six days and I think that's why I haven't upated the blog, either. Not because I couldn't for technical reasons (all you Vista evangelistas), this is the Web, after all, but because I've spent so much time going through all the amazing stuff that comes with a MacBook.

Jan 24, '07 : It's my job

We do define ourselves through our work, don't we? I've been thinking about this quite a bit in the last weeks as I've encountered the phrase, "it's my job" in movies and in real life.

Jan 21, '07 : How Swede

For about five years (that'd be seven minus the two I lived in Finland) I've played rinkbandy with a bunch of guys north of Stockholm. It's a nice recreational league of something I consider to be a recreational sport; something that's a pleasure to play, but not enough to try to make a career in.

Jan 20, '07 : The Kid

Nausea invaded my stomach and my knees went weak. I could see Coach Williams walking towards me with his arms open wide.
“Holy shit, kid! I never thought I’d see this day,” he yelled. Coach Williams was a big man, and when he hugged me, you couldn’t basically see me at all. I simply disappeared in Coach’s embrace.

My wife asked me the other day, "Are all your sentences going to start with 'I heard a great podcast today'?" The way things are going, yes, that's about right.

I know it sounds a little fishy. In fact, somebody said that to me a few months ago. He said, "I've never heard anyone use a podcast as a reference before."

Stockholm is a beautiful city. I just walked through Kungsträdgården in downtown Stockholm. Kids were skating around, screaming and having fun - with helmets on, naturally - in the sun, and it just made me want to jump in, and maybe do a lutz or an axel.

Skating in Kungsan

Like this guy. And yes, he is skating in Kungsträdgården in Stockholm.

It was much colder this time last year.

Jan 15, '07 : Bern to be wild

SC Langnau and SC Bern, the two hockey teams based in Bern, Switzerland, broke the European attendance record for one game yesterday when over 30 000 people (30 076) witnessed their derby at the Stade de Suisse stadium.

Jan 13, '07 : Planning on going solo

Why is it that few artists remain as successful on their solo careers as when they're in a band? The first ones that come to mind are The Beatles. No matter what you think of Imagine, or Got My Mind Set On You, or anything by the Wings, I think we can agree that the Beatles was greater than the sum of their parts.

Drove down to my local sushi bar a couple of blocks away and... well, it was raining and it's closer to 700 meters to the place and... anyway, I drove down, and saw a police car with the sirens on coming towards me. It's not something we see every day around here, so I got kind of curious.

Here we go again. My first NHL Blog Central entry of '07 is right here and below:

You are my destiny
”I quit.”

I’ve told my friends just that past months. I quit hockey. I just don’t have the energy or the commitment anymore. Hockey just doesn’t seem to do it for me like it used to.

I have quite a few feeds in my FeedDemon but often I just read the blog entries and skip the comments. The other day, I did visit Malcolm Gladwell's site because he posed a question about Enron there, and I wanted to see if somebody had answered him.

This from The Guardian:
3. Being noticed is not the same as being remarkable. Running down the street naked will get you noticed, but it won't accomplish much. It's easy to pull off a stunt, but not useful.

Here's another story from about a year ago.

Business is a contact sport
Major sporting events attract billions of people around the world. Major sponsors are lining up to be affiliated with the Olympics, the World Cup, and different world championships in different sports to grab the loyal fan’s attention. And loyalty. And money.

Business and major sporting events have always gone hand in hand. For example, Coca-Cola has supported the Olympics since 1928 and it recently extended its Olympic sponsorship through 2020. The Olympic Games will be the staging ground for a host of new Coca-Cola products in the future as in the past.

Why is it that every time you rent a classic movie, like, say, "Rain Man" because it's been 15 years since you last saw it, it's on TV the same night? Alternatively, you talk about a movie with a friend, by chance, and then it's on TV the next day?

No, I'm not going to write about some site every day, but this is pretty good.

Trust is hard. Being afraid is easy.

Today, I interviewed an executive at Swedish Vattenfall, about an incident they had a nuclear plant, and their analysis of it. He said all the right things, they are doing all the right things (investing more money, adding staff, easing up on the pressure on people there, etc.) and yet, they're not going to get recognition for it.
