Saw this piece of news today:

Maxim Mamin, 20, tested positive in a random doping control on January 2, 2008, following the game Russia – Czech Republic at the 2008 IIHF World U20 Championship in Pardubice, Czech Republic. Both the A-sample as well as the requested test of the B-sample confirmed the presence of norandrosterone, a metabolite of the anabolic steroid nandrolone.

And my mind raced straight to Dave King’s book King of Russia…

… where he details his year as the first Canadian coach in Russia.

This is what King wrote:

I am most suspicious of the final member of our coaching staff, Viktor Gudzik, our fitness and strength coach, who seems to pride himself on his recovery techniques. I wonder about his methods, though. He passes out pills and gives injections that no one seems to know much about – other than that they don’t seem to run afoul of the league policy on drug testing … It’s noteworthy that he didn’t join us for our camp in Germany back in July because he couldn’t get a visa – something to do with substances that he either took in or out of Germany a few years back that have him on the “no-entry” list right now.

And he was tested positive Jan2? Crazy.
