(C)able guys

Our cable TV provider was acquired by another company a few months ago. For us, that meant picking up a new digital box for our TV. According to the instructions that came with the new box, we should now throw the old one in the garbage.

Or, not “garbage”, because that would be irresponsible. “Your own recycling center,” the instructions say.

That’d be the two guys in red overalls that come with the garbage truck once a week and haul everything away. So, next week, they’ll be going away with Christmas trees (saw one last week), kitchen sinks (they really do take everything), and a bunch digital boxes.

I think it’s interesting that the recycling has been pushed over to the customers.

Anyway, the instructions also said that we shouldn’t use the cable that was inside the carton, but instead, use the old one. Go figure.

So, there I was, (A) connecting the box to the TV set with the old cable and (B) tossing the old box, and punching in installation codes and inserting the digital TV smart card (that needs to be inserted upside down) when I got to point (C) in the instructions: “If you want to hook up the box with your VCR, insert cable to (D).”

I couldn’t find one. There was no VCR. We don’t have one.

In fact, we have no recording device for TV, whatsoever. If we’re not home when “24” is on, Jack’s on his own. I’m still trying to figure out what that is a sign of. See, I am the guy who was raised on American sitcoms (mostly Happy Days), but lately I just don’t care.

“24” is the only show I follow – religiously, yes, so the above example was not a good one, we’re always home when Jack’s on – and there are so many great shows I have never watched. Starting with “Lost”.

Instead, I sit on the couch and watch the fourth season of Columbo.

Shows on DVD is my recording device. All the great shows are on DVD – as I saw in Virgin Megastore in London last week – so I’m pretty much set.

Now, I just need to know what the great shows are so that I can buy the DVDs. I hear Twin Peaks is pretty good.
